Having gotten into David Hasselhoff's music at age 11 thanks to the power of the hit single "Looking For Freedom" and watching David perform it on German TV, I have had high hopes for this new album of his, especially after he only recently made a comeback in music with the song "Jump In My Car".

So I took the time and listened carefully to the streaming preview samples from the new album. The good news is that David's voice sounds just beautiful on the new tunes, really much much better than on "Jump in My Car". The bad news is, however, that David and his management team have picked a producer who put David's great voice into AutoTune and surrounded him with cheap Apres-Ski / Mallorca Schlager disco beats. A strong song like Peter Kent's "A Real Good Feeling" sung by a strong voice such as David's cannot be ruined by that, but somehow the enjoyment can be spoiled.

Whereas "Looking For Freedom" with its late 80s era vintage keyboard sound originally came in a faux-Philadelphia soul-meets-rock arrangement, the updated version sounds dance-countrified, much like Swedish outfit Rednex dance-countrified the classic country song "Cotton Eyed Joe" with their cheap 90s era dancefloor beats. The remixes and the megamix are completely unnecessary and "Masquerade" feels totally out of place on David's album, especially since it's way too reminiscent of "Silly Boy" by Eva Simons.

Somehow, I get the feeling that when David visited Germany a while ago and appeared in the Schlager TV show Musikantenstadl, he must have met a few shady characters there that seem to have convinced him to record an all-out Schlager album. I confess, I'm not a good fan because I did not dig all the rather Schlager-like tunes that David's producer from the height of his musical career, Jack White, created for David. Stuff like "Wir zwei allein" or "Torero Te Quiero" was never my cup of tea. It took quite a long time getting into the über-hit "Crazy For You" as well, but nowadays, I enjoy it very much. Yet, I feel David is best at home doing soulful (maybe even bluesy) Rock N Roll and Ballads.

"This Time Around" from the new album presents him as a modern day Dean Martin. I feel it's the strongest song of the album. It would be great to see David on the big screen, too, in a modern day Dean Martin capacity because just like Dean, David is an allrounder when it comes to being an entertainer.

This album could have been great if there were more of the ballads like "This Time Around" and the rocking tunes were performed with real instruments instead of using conciously cheap keyboard sounds and plastic dance beats, especially because David's voice is in great shape again. It's sad that the producer did not have a more organic approach to the musical arrangements. I also wish we'd get more of David's musical taste on this disc. As such, there is just not enough of David on the album.

I don't understand why David Hasselhoff and his management have not chosen to record an album in America, but went Schlager instead. There are so many great writers and producers in both LA and Nashville. How about guys like John Shanks, Don Was and Dan Huff? And if it had to be a German producer, I would have picked Mousse T because he both had a hit as an artist in the US and worldwide, and he also knows the German dance party scene from his other career as a DJ. He's also worked with string sections of orchestras before, so he could even have produced the ballad half of the album.

But as things are, I'll most likely skip this album with the Schlager disco beats on it, like I did with "Du" back in the day. Just for the record, my favourite tunes by David are "Looking For Freedom", "Jump in My Car", "I Believe" (RIP Laura Branigan), "Hot Shot City". "Crazy For You", "Avignon" and "Rebel in Blue Jeans". Neil Diamond's original cannot be topped, but David did a very strong cover of it.

Besides this time around, the highlights of the album are the title track, "Heartbreak Cafe" and "You Are A Hero", mainly because they sound like well written songs which David performs convincingly.

I'd like to end this first impression on a lighter note and say: Thank you David for all your music over the years. It's been a pleasure.

I listened to both cd's and here is my opinion. I've got the same opinion like Dirk and Marina. I'm fan of you since summer 1989 and I've got all cd's I could get of you because it's from you. But the last albums I have to say I don't really like them. It makes me feeling to get some alcohol drinks, so that I could like those ballermann songs.

David, I know you can more! You could singing on Broadway! I hoped you could release "The Romantics" because those songs you would published there, that were you! Songs Like "This is the Moment" or "This Time around" that's more you in there then songs like Pina Colada Girl, California Cirl and songs like that.

For young people who wanna make party the songs are great as long as they need to hear them. But for your longtime fans like me, we are growing up and I think also the taste of music is growing up with us. I visited 3 concert of you and the showcase show in Zurich and I liked the "3D you are everything tour 1994" most.

My favorite songs on these two albums are:

1. I'll be here with you

2. This time around

3. Looking for freedom 2011

4. The Hoff Medley

5. It's a real good feeling

6. It's a real good feeling (Malibu Mix)

7. It's a real good feeling (Fox Mix)

8. The Hoff Party Megamix 2011

9. Bella Vida - Masquerade

All the other songs I don't know...

Sorry for my bad review of the cd's but thats my opinion! I know you can more!!!!!! But you can be sure I will always support you!

Greetings from switzerland.
