Anja, Marcia, and I shared my room at Cache Creek. Wandering around on our floor, trying to find the pool, we came across a suite of meeting rooms, several of which were marked “Hasselhoff Rehearsal”. That was a promising start to our adventure!
Due to a problem with our Minibar and the room phones, we ended up with a $50 food credit on our account.
We decided to spend it on a Mega breakfast the morning of the concert. When room service arrived Sunday morning, the server asked us why we were there, and we told her. She got excited and told us that David was the next stop on her round. Needless to say, when she left we peeked down the hallway to see where she was going. Boy, were we surprised. She didn’t turn at the elevator as we had expected, but kept going down the hall on our floor. David Hasselhoff’s room was on the same floor as ours! This weekend was getting better by the minute. After we enjoyed our very scrumptious breakfast, we decided to finally check out the pool area outside. I usually swim three times a week for exercise and while I was currently sidelined due to emergency gall bladder surgery ten days before the concert, I still enjoyed the serenity of the pool and hot tub area. Coming back inside, Anja and I were trying to decide what to do next when we saw a tall figure coming down the hallway towards us. Imagine our delight when we recognized David. He walked past us and we said
“Hi”. He was kind enough to chat with us for a minute before heading into the Spa.
Knowing that there was only one way in and out of the Spa area, we decided to hang around for a while. Our patience was rewarded when David came back out after a what seemed a very long time to head towards the rehearsal rooms. We asked him a couple of questions and once again, he was kind enough to stop and chat with us even though he looked a little tired and stressed (can’t imagine why). We inquired about the possibility of an autograph session before or after the concert and he said “Ladies, just come see me back stage after the concert and I’ll sign a few things for you”. Needless to say, we were ecstatic.
A little while later, reality set in. What were our chances of actually making it past security to get back stage by saying “Oh, David told us it was alright”? We decided to just see what the evening would bring.
About an hour before they opened the doors we headed for the club to see if there were any t-shirts or other memorabilia for sale. I could hear the dress rehearsal going on inside and I liked what I heard – a lot. Someone from David’s staff was at the concession stand and we told him about our conversation with David earlier that
morning. We also told him that we did not have VIP passes and didn’t know what to do after the concert. He promised to find a way to get us our autographs, which made us very happy. He told us to find him after the concert, and he would take care of us.
The curtain that closed off the club entrance opened about one hour before the concert, and we took our seats. I had noticed David slipping into the dressing room at the far side of the club and I couldn’t wait for the show to
start. Then, shortly after 8, the lights went out, and the first notes of “This is the Moment” from Jekyll and Hyde
filled the air. There was David, standing on the catwalk that was normally used by the club’s dancers. What a beautiful song! David made his way from platform to platform across the club and finally ended up at the front stage.
The next song was a Rat-Pack style version of the Nina Simone song “Feeling Good”, which David originally performed on America’s Got Talent. The man sure knows how to wear a Fedora! Then, David talked a little bit about his hero and idol, Sammy Davis Jr. and as a tribute to Sammy and his Mom, he sang a couple of Sammy’s songs, “Since I fell for you”, and “What kind of Fool Am I”. At the end of the song, David announced a never before seen reel of Knight Rider outtakes. As soon as the video started, I realized that I owned a CD with those exact clips, which were put together for a season wrap party (I think it was season 3). Nevertheless, I enjoyed the clips very much.
During one part of the show David and the Lalas, his backup dancers, launched into a parody of Baywatch, staged to the theme song, performed by David. During the song, they all kicked and threw beach balls into
the audience. I managed to catch one of them and actually hang on to it throughout the show.
On and on it went, one song after another., “California Girls”, “Jump Into My Car”, ”Unchain My Heart”, and many more. The only noticeable glitch of the show happened right at the beginning, when David’s hands-free mike wouldn’t work properly, and he had to use a hand-held mike for the rest of the evening.
For the final song of the concert, David talked about our choices in life and how important it is to be there for one another. Then he performed “I’ll Be there”, and was joined by his daughters Taylor Ann and Hayley. It was a wonderful ending to a great show.
After the show, Anja and I did indeed manage to meet David and have our picture taken with him. David also signed a T-shirt for my daughter, who is too young to attend the show. She was thrilled to hear that he know how to spell her name correctly without me telling him (German versus American spelling). My only problem now
is that I don’t know if we will actually get copies of our picture, because without the VIP passes, there is no official contact address for us. The staff member to remain un-named ;) did write down our e-mail addresses on a piece of paper and promised to get in touch with us, but a piece of paper can easily get lost. Honestly, I am a little worried at this time.
Hopefully, there will be more shows here in the US. I know a lot of folks who would like to see David Hasselhoff here in Central Texas. I know I would go again!
